USM is one of only a dozen universities in America to hold accreditation in all four fine arts emphasis areas of art, dance, theatre and music. The College of Fine Arts is the only such College in Mississippi.
The school of Communications is ranked among the Top 10 programs in the nation, according to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

In collaboration with the U.S. Navy, Southern Miss operates the nation's only accredited hydrographic science program, which uses sophisticated technology to map ocean floors.
More then 40 % of Southern Miss graduates pursue degrees and many find homes at such prestigious graduate schools as Yale, Harvard, Duke, Johns Hopkins, UCLA, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Georgetown.
USM ranks in the Top 10 nationally among doctoral institutions in the number of degree-seeking students studying abroad each year.
